The Gold Croc, The 93rd Annual Academy Awards
I designed a gold-chromed Croc shoe for Questlove to wear on the Oscar red carpet. Crocs did not offer many options in my client’s size, so my studio partnered with Matthew Ready and Chrome Factory to bring the vision to life. The unique shoe garnered attention from major media outlets:
BBC.com, Vogue.com, CNET, Refinery 29, Grazia Magazine, and Complex Magazine.
The Guardian wrote: “But the biggest pop culture win for Crocs in 2021 was being the first ugly shoe on the Oscars red carpet, as worn by Questlove, in gold.”In interviews, I explained that the shoe was a deliberate nod to African American creativity and a celebration of Crocs as a versatile artistic medium.
